My review of Downfall by Terri Blackstock!

About the book:

Emily Covington has turned her life around after a drug addiction, but her family still has trouble trusting her. Though Emily has committed herself to a year-long treatment program and has been sober for almost a year beyond that, even her mother walks on eggshells around her, fearing she'll relapse. After her behavior during her drug years, Emily realizes she has a lot to prove. When police discover a homemade bomb under Emily's car, and she then learns the wife of one of her friends was murdered that same morning, she knows things are deadly serious. But who wants Emily dead? And why? A conversation she had with two men, an Alfred Hitchcock movie, and a plan for a double murder all conspire for one explosive ride ... and Emily is the only one who can identify the killer and save the life of the next potential victim. As she frantically works to solve this ever more complicated puzzle, Emily finds herself playing right into the killer's hands.

My review:

Let me start off by saying I loved how the story ended. That's not always the case, but here it was perfect. Though chock full of murder and intrigue, this story had a lot of things going for it. The romance was heart-warming and believable. I was routing for the couple to endure and come out stronger in the end. There were a number of dynamic characters that I remembered from the prior book and I was glad to see them return for the last installment of the series. Their struggles were believable and I found myself rooting for them every step of the way. Mayhem was happening all around, so it made sense to me that stress would abound in their lives. At the same time what a great way for the characters to grow in their faith. This was well done and didn't seem sappy to me. Great job there.

In regards to the suspense aspect of this novel, I read it from start to finish in less than 24 hours. I don't do that very often, but the author had me riveted to my seat, literally. I loved how the plot wasn't predictable and how the investigation took a number of twists and turns. The bad guy was a true nutcase and that reason alone made him a threat in my mind. I liked not knowing who it was until the end. But the cool thing is that I also bought the ending. I could see how it made sense. I've read other books where I've said at the end, "What? No way!" But for this story the author built up enough of a tie in to the crime to make sense so I didn't doubt the validity of the killer's identity when it was revealed.

Downfall was published by Zondervan and will release in March 2012.

I have really enjoyed this series as dealing with a sibling with drug addiction made it really so real!
