Synopsis:
"When all is said and done, killing my mother came easily."
So begins The Almost Moon, Alice Sebold's astonishing, brilliant, and daring new novel. A woman steps over the line into the unthinkable in this unforgettable work by the author of The Lovely Bones and Lucky.
For years Helen Knightly has given her life to others: to her haunted mother, to her enigmatic father, to her husband and now grown children. When she finally crosses a terrible boundary, her life comes rushing in at her in a way she never could have imagined.
Unfolding over the next twenty-four hours, this searing, fast-paced novel explores the complex ties between mothers and daughters, wives and lovers; the meaning of devotion; and the line between love and hate. It is a challenging, moving, gripping story, written with the fluidity and strength of voice that only Alice Sebold can bring to the page.
My thoughts:
I haven't read this book nor do I own a copy of it so I can't vouch for the content. It does sound a tad morbid to me and some of the reviews say it wasn't as good as The Lovely Bones, so I dunno what to say except if you want to try it put your name down in a comment and I'll draw a winner next weekend.
Side note: I don't get the impression this is a Christian book either. I think the first line above is a "dead" giveaway, no pun intended. Well, not really.

The first line of the synopsis is completely intriguing. It makes me want to know why she would do such a thing.

Why does this book intrigue me? Well, duh.... why did she kill her mother? Also the title... what is an "almost moon"?

Cheers!
Obviously the first line makes you stop and almost do one of those little cartoon head shakes while trying to confirm that is what you read. I just want to know how does someone get to that point and to the point where it really isn't a shock even to them.
I would like a chance please. :)

It took me time to gain the courage and to get talked into reading The Lovely Bones, for the same reason as you thought about Almost Moon. Sounded morbid!
I finally did read The Lovely Bones and was so glad I read it. Yes, the topic was morbid but the book was so much more than the main character's disappearence and murder, much more. The writing was brilliant.
That's what intrigues me about winning Almost Moon. I want to read more by Alice Sebold.

the book sounds great..please enter me in the contest..thank you..Patty..wolfie53 at sbcglobal.net
My mind goes so many directions when I read that opening line. Was her poor mother suffering a great deal? Is this a cold blooded killing? What would possess someone to do something like that? Was her mother a real monster to her? I just have to hear the explanation and what lead up to the killing. Thank you for the chance to win this book.
Thanks for the giveaway. The first line got my interest.

I've heard a lot about this book and it does really intrigue me. How and why she kills her mother is what intrigues. Though I'd also like to get to know these people who end up in that kind of situation.

Alice Sebold wrote a book I really was touched by, "The Lovely Bones.' It was very sad, very dark, very deep but it exampled what a little girl in Heaven who had been raped and killed would feel like about what was being done for her on earth.
Almost Moon seems like one I would like as well. I like human interest stories as long as I temper them with good Christian books to help me keep my Hope in the world.
Thanks for offering to let me sign up. I am very grateful;

Best. First. Line. Ever!
I am dying to read the book now.
I'm always interested in reading things that are as far away from my life, just ot get life's different perspectives.
I really want to know the thought process before deciding to kill her mother. Count me in the running.
Please enter me. Can't wait to find out what happens.

The first line is disturbing/intriguing makes me want to see what is next. I am hoping it is not true just a way of saying she cut some ties away from a controlling mom (I hope). It certainly sounds different. I'll read it.
hmmm... sounds interesting!
I just finished read some of brandilyn collins' books and i want to read some more suspense books :)
I'm intrigued by what causes her to cross the line. rsgrandinetti@yahoo.com
I haven't read The Lovely Bones but it's on my list. I'd love to read The Almost Moon also because I can't imagine my mother doing something so awful that I'd want to harm her in any way, let alone do what Helen does to her mother. What was she thinking? What pushed her over the edge? How could you live with yourself after doing something like that? What happened to her after that? Did she fall on her knees and beg for forgiveness? Was she even sorry? I'd like to read this book and see if I could find an answer to these and other questions.
That first line definitely is pulling me in! Sounds like an interesting book. I really liked her other books, so please enter me ;)

I enjoyed Sebold's other books. I've seen this on the shelf at work and have wanted to pick it up and leaf through it. Just haven't had the time though. I like her writing, it makes me think outside my own box.
Hello,
I just recently finished The Lovely Bones and would love to give another one by her a try. I really liked the first one!

I love Alice Sebold! She is a fantastic author and I have really enjoyed her other books. The Lovely Bones is one of my favorite books. And as morbid as the subject is, it sounds interesting.
What intrigues me is what eventually makes her snap. What was the final straw for her?

Mother/daughter relationships intrigue me!
The first line is definitely intriguing. I'm curious about what the reasoning behind this is.
bball11kt(at)sbcglobal(dot)net
I am pretty interested in true crime so this would be a good read to me I think. I know it is not true but just bears resemblance to a true episode. Anyway I would like to try and read it if I am lucky enough to win the drawing.
thanks,
Lela Fox
I'd like to try this book for several reasons.
1. I've heard this title hear and there for a while now and would like to read to see what it is all about.
2. The title reminds me of one of my favorite children's books "Good Night Moon" : )
Thanks so much,
Darby
