Those eyes...to me they are saying "I'm afraid", "help me", but there is some "I'm strong" in there as well.

his eyes seems so much older than he is so I guess they convey pain in some measure.
The boys eyes look they could tell a story. He looks very said and void. Something has happened to him that no child should have to go through. SAD.......

I don't want to be a sad sack but I find it odd to judge the book based on the cover model. Let's assume the book was written first and the artwork was later developed. The book sounds intriguing, sort of like 'at swim, two boys'. Count me in.

Would this be the 1870's? Because I cannot imagine 1970's boarding houses. That would make this a Victorian novel, if so he looks adenoidional...
