My review of Three Maids for a Crown; a novel of The Grey Sisters by Ella March Chase

About the book:

In the second novel from Ella March Chase, we meet sixteen-year-old Jane Grey, a quiet and obedient young lady destined to become the shortest reigning English monarch. Her beautiful middle sister Katherine Grey charms all the right people--until loyalties shift. And finally Lady Mary Grey, a dwarf with a twisted spine whose goal is simply to protect people she loves--but at a terrible cost.

In an age in which begetting sons was all that mattered and queens rose and fell on the sex of their child, these three girls with royal Tudor blood lived under the dangerous whims of parents with a passion for gambling. The stakes they would wager: their daughters' lives against rampant ambition.

My review:

I enjoyed this author's writing style and perspective. Normally I would read books like this in a day, or two at the most, but I've been pretty busy lately so I haven't had much time to read. That said, I would definitely recommend this book. I have always found the reluctance of Jane Grey to be appointed queen and being forced to marry at fifteen a bit of a travesty. Women had no rights and were used as pawns back then. And being of royal blood makes the issue that much worse, especially if people wanted you to help their family take over the kingdom. This story was told over time through the perspectives of the three sisters. They all experienced grief and loss. They were all used by their parents to further the family's ambition and power. None were truly valued for themselves.

At any rate, I found the story tragically beautiful. The love stories of the two remaining Grey sisters, of Lady Mary and Lady Katherine, was emotionally moving. I felt their pain and the denial of true love by the crown. They had to marry in secret and hope to be forgiven, but Elizabeth was not a forgiving queen, at least from the perspective of the "sisters of royal blood". She always saw them as a threat and kept them imprisoned or in her service. I loved how Lady Mary Grey pitied Queen Elizabeth whose fear put her in a prison of her own making. Good story and worth the read for the take-away value alone. It made me think about the meaning of true love and commitment to family. I am glad I picked up a copy.

Three Maids for a Crown was published by Broadway Books and released in 2011.

My review of Between These Walls by John Herrick

About the book:

Hunter is a Christian. Hunter is the man next door.

Hunter Carlisle is gay.

At 26 years old, Hunter Carlisle has a successful sales career, a devoted girlfriend, and rock-solid faith. He also guards a secret torment: an attraction to other men. When a career plunge causes muscle tension, Hunter seeks relief through Gabe Hellman, a handsome massage therapist. What begins as friendship takes a sudden turn and forces the two friends to reconsider the boundaries of attraction.

Along the road to self-discovery, Hunter’s secret is exposed to the community. Now Hunter must face the demons of his past and confront his long-held fears about reputation, sexual identity, and matters of soul.

A story of faith, fire and restoration, Between These Walls braves the crossroads of love and religion to question who we are and who we will become.

Publisher's full disclosure to readers: This novel of faith occurs within a true-to-life context of redemption, and contains adult language and content

My review:

John Herrick is a fantastic writer that knows how to draw you into a character's heart and mind. I always feel a connection to his characters. Given the description, I got the gist of the content. But the beauty in writing a story about internal conflict is that you can dig down deep and make the story go any way you want it to. And that's where the artistry begins.

The content gets a bit heavy at times, which means you almost have to digest it slowly to grasp the heart of the book. But I love novels that make me examine the hard things in life. There are no pat answers, and Hunter asks himself just about every question a man would consider in his situation. It's tough to wrap your mind around the concept if you haven't given it much though. I found the story to be well-thought-out and spiritually sound.

On the surface, the term "gay Christian" seems like an oxymoron. But it's really a story about dark, internal secrets and hiding our true selves from the world. It's a sin like any other sin. The heart of the story is about the struggle. About pretending to be something we're not and how it not only hurts ourselves, but others we love, when we bury things deep inside and let no one in.

What spoke to my heart the most in this story was the deep, emotional conflict Hunter had within himself. The author didn't emphasize Hunter and Gabe's sexual attraction, but focused more on their feeling drawn emotionally to something not really understood, but felt nevertheless. Feelings aren't sinful. God understands that we struggle, which is where grace comes in.

The truth is Jesus came to save us from our sins - both outward and inward. That doesn't necessarily make our struggles go away. Like with the Apostle Paul, who wrestled for the rest of his life with a "thorn in the flesh." God did not take it from him even when he begged for relief. Sometimes our struggles are a part of who we are. We don't know how they started or how they will end. It's all part of the journey we call life. The lesson is to lean on God through it all. Great story and highly recommended.

Between These Walls is available for pre-order on Amazon as an e-book and will be released in paperback format in early 2015. This is a book for my keeper shelf! Pre-order it today so you can get it right when it releases!

Out of Time by Michelle Sutton featured in Haute Pink e-magazine (with excerpt)

Read an excerpt from Out of Time by Michelle Sutton featured in this online magazine. If you have a thing for shoes, makeup, clothing, fashion designers, purses, and vacation resorts, you may want to check out the entire magazine. However if you want to skip to my featured book and the excerpt for Out of Time then skip over to pages 154-159. This issue of Haute Pink just released today and this is the second issue. There are about five to six issues each year. The last one featured my book Never Without Hope, but that's with a different publisher. Anyway, enjoy the excerpt. Of course, it's a kissing scene. I like sharing those with you all.

Out now... and coming soon.

This is my most dramatic book so far because I address unconditional love in a way never seen before in Christian fiction. If you don't believe me, try it and you'll see what I'm talking about... More about the book:

Love is a decision, or is it merely an emotion?

Eight years after Tony and Hope's affair ended, new problems arise. Jimmy has gone off to college, but returns home with a startling revelation that devastates his father and causes his final heart attack. Now Hope is grieving the loss of both her husband and their son. She tries to make sense of everything, and in the end she decides to love her son through the grief. More than that, she makes the decision to love whoever her son chooses to love, whether she agrees with his choices or not.

Tony's life has its own disaster tearing through it. First, he is accused of killing his ex-wife, but he is soon released once the authorities realize he had nothing to do with it. The tragedy with his ex led to some major changes in his life, however, and some soul-searching that ultimately turns Tony's life around. While he is still adjusting to his new perspective on life, his long-lost daughter Nina contacts him and has some secrets of her own. He is overjoyed to be reunited with his daughter, but with their relationship comes an entirely new set of challenges.

Jimmy is confused about his faith, his life, and ultimately, whom he should love. After some severe trials knock him off what he thought was the right course for his life, he makes the decision to love himself enough not to be used by someone again. But will his decision protect him in the end?

Paperback coming in July 2012.

And since I couldn't end the series, even though I thought Decision to Love was it, I had another cover made for the book releasing next year. What do you think? Those little stuffed bears on the bed have some significance but you have to keep reading the series to find out what that is...

It's Not About Her now on Kindle! May 1st paperback will be for sale!

About the book:
Deena Tyler's mother led an unsavory lifestyle with drugs and men prior to Deena being taken into foster care as a teenager by a pastor and his wife. She vows never to be anything like her mother. Her dream is to become a pastor's wife so someday she'll have a family life similar to her foster parents. She dresses plainly to keep guys from being attracted to her, and the one guy she is interested in only sees her as a friend. She has secretly been in love with Tony Lane since he started dating her roommate during their freshman year of college and he talked about wanting to become a youth pastor after graduation. But when her roommate died, Tony left town and changed schools. Deena transfers to the college in his home town so she can provide him with moral support, only he just wants to forget the past and move on.

Tony has always fallen for beautiful women, but because of a few bad experiences with his former girlfriends he vows to focus on earning his college degree and to skip dating his sophomore year. But he's not good at staying away from the opposite sex, which is a real problem since he wants to become a pastor. Girl troubles tend to stir up former addictions that he has battled for the past two years, so he works hard at stifling his wild side, though he isn't very successful in his attempts. To complicate things further, his friend Deena, whom he has never been attracted to because she's fairly plain, starts looking really good to him. Can he handle a new relationship this time around without messing it up, or is he destined to remain single?

In recognition of Infertility Awareness month I'd like to introduce a book designed to encourage.

Letting Go (Healing Hearts, book 1) is about a woman dealing with infertility issues (among several others) and a single foster father who happens to be sterile and whose adoption is threatened by the State. He hires an attorney to help protect his only chance of being a father.

So if you know of any adoptive parents or couples dealing with infertility issues, you may want to tell them about this novel. The story was written to show their struggles with infertility, but also to encourage readers and heal broken hearts. The paperback is currently out of stock on Amazon and CBD (not a bad thing) so it's on back order. The paperback is not yet available on B&N. However, you can still get it on kindle and nook. Just click on the cover to take you to Amazon, or go to Christianbook.com or get the nook book on B&N. Have an encouraging month.

My review/endorsement for Something Stirs by Thomas Smith.

Something Stirs

About the book:

Ben Chalmers is a successful novelist. His wife, Rachel, is a fledgling artist with a promising career, and their daughter, Stacy, is the joy of their lives. Ben's novels have made enough money for him to provide a dream home for his family. But there is a force at work-a dark, chilling, ruthless force that has become part of the very fabric of their new home.

A malevolent entity becomes trapped in the wood and stone of the house and it will do whatever it takes, to find a way to complete its bloody transference to our world.

Local sheriff, Elizabeth Cantrell, and former pastor-turned-cabinetmaker, Jim Perry, are drawn into the family's life as the entity manipulates the house with devastating results. And it won't stop until it gets what it wants. Even if it costs them their faith, their sanity, and their lives.

My review:

Something Stirs is not a book to be read at night! The house is evil, and that makes this story different from most terrifying tales. It's not a novel for easily frightened people because it delves into the kind of evil that actually exists. I worried about the teens that stirred up the spirits and I was concerned about the people living in the house. A bloodthirsty entity had been unleashed and was growing stronger by the day. Only the powerful name of Jesus Christ is strong enough to combat this kind of evil presence. Thought this is a chilling tale, I found it inspiring because it shows that God is present for those who call on His name. Not even the powers of hell can steal us from his saving hand!

Something Stirs was published by Tabera Press/Sonfire Media and was released in May 2011.

Don't forget my book, First Response, releases today!

I'm flying to NY to go to my dad's funeral today, so I won't be around to promote my own book release. I pre-posted this on blogger before I left. Do me a favor and if you haven't gotten this book already, please order it directly from the Desert Breeze Publishing site (the authors get the most money from direct orders, and I could really use the finances right now to cover the cost of flying back for the funeral services.) And if you are a friend and/or a fan I really need help promoting this book for the first week it releases, but I won't be around any computers to do any promotion, so help? Here is a link to the site where you can get my book.

...and to remind you of the beautiful cover and the snippet about the story, I'm including that, too.

Chet's response to an unexpected massage from Trinity embarrasses him, but he wants to see her again. Since he doesn't get any romance in real life, he's writing love stories on the side hoping to become a published author someday. So far he hasn't written a novel good enough to sell, but when he meets Trinity his muse not only returns, but his writing is stellar. Too bad it's only fiction.

Trinity is a massage therapist who has issues with men. Her last ex was a no good cheater. But she misses dating, and especially kissing. When she meets Chet she decides she must have him. They start dating and things heat up quickly. They are caught between wanting to prove themselves since their former relationships left them wounded, and doing the right thing, which is to wait for marriage. It proves to be more difficult than either of them anticipated.

Their Separate Ways is coming soon! E-book in May, paperback in July!

Here is the video trailer about the book...

And here is the book description. What do you think???

Forgiveness is a beautiful thing when you experience it in marriage... But what if you don't?

What happened in the hearts of Tony Perotta and Hope Williams after the affair was exposed and they went their separate ways? Did they struggle with memories from their past relationship, or with wishing things would've turned out differently? Was trust ever restored in their homes after their lives crashed and burned around them? Did they ever heal enough to enjoy their marriages as before, or were they even worse off after their sin was revealed?

Their Separate Ways continues the saga the year after the exposure of Tony and Hope's extramarital affair. It's an honest and close-up look at the inner workings of each of their hearts as they reflect on the painful memories resulting from that devastating choice. Experience with them the vast difference between couples who know true forgiveness and who have hope, and those who don't.

I love this cover! Description of the book is below...

When she met the lonesome stud cowboy, Jimmy, she knew he was the one. So why was their communication always so awkward? Couldn't he see that she was interested in him? No matter how hard she tried to win him over, she couldn't seem to get him to see past his first impression of her. But Sammie didn't give up easily. Description of Danger at the Door by Michelle Sutton

You asked for details beyond the cool cover. Here you go!

About the book:

AVAILABLE AUGUST 1, 2009

Upon her fiancé's death, Laney became a recluse who only left her home for emergencies. She managed to survive - barely - on food delivery service and her work-at-home job. When she tries to move on from her grief, the commemorative meal she orders is ruined. However, it leads to an unlikely friendship with an attractive man, Bojan, who speaks little English. As he befriends Laney he continually says the wrong things, but he doesn't give up trying to win her trust.

Meanwhile, she has this strange feeling of being watched and wonders if she's losing her mind. Complicating things further, every time she leaves her house something bad happens, confirming that she is safer at home. Can Bojan convince Laney she'll be safe with him, or will his presence put her in further danger? Will he be able to protect the woman he loves before it's too late?

My thoughts:

This story is rated warm/sweet, which means it's a cross between these two categories...

Sweet - Novels with a 'Sweet' rating will have nothing more physical than some shared kisses. They may hold hands, embrace, enjoy limited displays of affection, but it goes no further. If there is physical intimacy, it is only implied.

Warm - Novels with a 'Warm' rating take things a little further. Kisses may be more heated, embraces may be more intense. Physical intimacy may or may not occur, but it 'goes to the door' and stops. No details.

(Okay, I couldn't resist. This is MICHELLE here, people. If you don't like my style, don't read the book. If you do enjoy tense romance, then definitely check it out. And please post a review, too. When a publisher allows a yummy romance I'm SO there! It's edgy in that regard but no "sinning" takes place. Just my trademark sizzle. If you like that you will enjoy this story. It's loaded with humor and romantic tension. And yeah, there is a creepy bad guy.)

This is an e-book, which means that for 5.99 you can own it. Eventually it will be a hard cover copy (in a year or so) but why wait when you can read it now? Laptops and PCs work just as well as Kindles, Sony Readers and iPhones.

My first live autograph today and other fun facts!

I am learning so much about this book business every day. For one, even though my book officially releases tomorrow (actually midnight tonight - whoo hoo!) people have been receiving my book already. So whether the order came from Amazon or Barnes and Noble, my book has been shipped out. One such recipient approached me at church this morning and asked if I'd sign her book and write something in it that I haven't written in anyone else's book. Well, that was easy as her autograph was my first official one. :) But I have been autographing reviewer copies as I mail them out, however, they don't count, IMHO as they aren't "live" requests. Not that any of that matters, really. I am just stoked that people are reading my story and enjoying it. I'm also thrilled about my upcoming book signing schedule. Some of the ladies at my church said they plan to hit every one of them (in state, at least). Now if that doesn't give ya a warm fuzzy, nothing will, eh?
