About the book:
In the illustrious history of the theatrical Fishers, there are two Georges. One is a peculiar but endearing 11-year-old, raised in the seedy world of '70s boarding houses and backstages, now packed off to school for the first time; the other, a garrulous ventriloquist's dummy who belonged to George's grandfather, a favorite traveling act of the British troops in World War II. The two Georges know nothing of each other--until events conspire to unite them in a search to uncover the family's deepest secrets.
Weaving the boy's tale and the puppet's "memoirs," BY GEORGE unveils the fascinating Fisher family--its weak men, its dominant women, its disgruntled boys, and its shocking and dramatic secrets. At once bitingly funny and exquisitely tender, Stace's novel is the unforgettable journey of two young boys separated by years but driven by the same desires: to find a voice, and to be loved.
That sounds like an amazing book; I'd love to read and review it. I'm a sucker for books set in England in the 1940's and 50's, and the theatrical tie-in sounds interesting. My email is skirkland@triad.rr.com Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds very interesting. To me, the eyes look scared and confused. I've always loved ventriloquist's. I would definitely like to win this book.

ReplyDeleteashrom@redfoxtv.tv
The isolation of the boy, and the quirkiness of a ventriloquist puppet having "memoirs" makes this story seem an interesting mesh of two worlds.

his eyes seems so much older than he is so I guess they convey pain in some measure.
ReplyDeleteThe boys eyes look they could tell a story. He looks very said and void. Something has happened to him that no child should have to go through. SAD.......
ReplyDeletetexasgirl(at)rocketmail(dot)com
I don't want to be a sad sack but I find it odd to judge the book based on the cover model. Let's assume the book was written first and the artwork was later developed. The book sounds intriguing, sort of like 'at swim, two boys'. Count me in.
ReplyDeleteThe boys' eyes look empty, forlorn and like he is hopeless! Please enter me in your book drawing.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, Cindi

ReplyDeleteIt looks like me when I was but a lad!
ReplyDeletetheyyyguy@yahoo.com
Would this be the 1870's? Because I cannot imagine 1970's boarding houses. That would make this a Victorian novel, if so he looks adenoidional...
ReplyDeleteThe picture of the boy almost looks haunting. Thank you.
ReplyDeletecandieluster(at)gmail(dot)com

His eyes, at least to me, convey that he doesn't get to have a whole lot of fun. There's no 'smile' to them.

The big eyes on the cover of the book tell me that the boy has seen things that a boy his age shouldn't have seen. A little spooky too.
ReplyDeleteAnd the winner is...
