Now I'm giving away Rain Dance by Joy DeKok

To enter your name to win a copy of this book simply post a comment regarding infertility issues or abortion issues. They are the subjects covered in this great book that I wholeheartedly endorsed. It's an awesome read. Now here are my thoughts...

I know numerous couples who don't have children who are in there forties and fifties. Some by choice, but most not by choice. I can only imagine the heartache from wanting to have a child and being unable to do so. And then there is the anger that would arise from knowing that people have simply discarded the children they conceived at the "wrong time" in their lives when they (the other couple) longs for a child. It does seem very unjust. I would think all of the Scriptures about barren wombs would stick out as I read the Bible. I imagine I would be angry, too. Fortunately I haven't had to deal with that kind of pain because I was pregnant twice and had two children who are both alive an well. But I know of numerous couples who have had issues that cause a lot of pain and grief. I also have known people who have gotten one abortion after another because they don't believe in birth control (don't ask, it doesn't make sense to me either.) Anyway, that is my spiel. So what do you all have to say about this subject?

About the book:

Jonica and Stacie meet in a doctor's office at a critical turning point in each of their lives. Jonica is ending unsuccessful infertility treatments and accepting the death of her dream of having children. Stacie has come to schedule the termination of her pregnancy so she can further her dream of a career in law.

Tentatively the two young women reach out to each other. Can they forge an uncommon friendship that will forever transform their future?

My endorsement:

"Rain Dance is compulsively readable. In that I mean that the characters draw you in and you feel like you want to keep reading their individual stories. There is a lot of emotion packed between the pages and the faith element is also very strong. I enjoyed the dynamics between the two friends and reading about their emotional and spiritual challenges. There are several wonderful, healing messages in this novel."--(Michelle Sutton, author of the Second Glances Series)

The Frontiersman's Daughter by Laura Frantz is up on CFBA!

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

The Frontiersman’s Daughter

Revell (September 1, 2009)

by

Laura Frantz

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I was born and raised in Kentucky and my love of history goes deep - way back to the 18th-century when my family first came into the Bluegrass State. It will always be home to me, even though I now live with my husband, Randy, and my sons, Wyatt and Paul, in the misty woods of northwest Washington. I go back as often as I can to visit family and all the old haunts that I love.

I grew up playing on the original site of Fort Boonesborough and swimming in the Kentucky River and climbing the Pinnacle near Berea and watching the great outdoor dramas of the early settlers. Often my cousins and brother and I would play in my Granny's attic and dress up in the pioneer costumes she made us and pretend to be Daniel Boone, Rebecca, Jemima, or the Shawnee.

As I grew up I began to write stories and they were always historical, filled with the lore I had heard or read about. It's no accident that my first book (which is actually my fifth book - the others were practice!) is about those first Kentucky pioneers.

I feel blessed beyond measure to write books. My prayer is that you are doubly blessed reading them.

Note: Laura Frantz credits her 100-year-old grandmother as being the catalyst for her fascination with Kentucky history. Frantz's family followed Daniel Boone into Kentucky in 1792 and settled in Madison County where her family still resides. Frantz is a former schoolteacher and social worker who currently lives in the misty woods of Washington state with her husband and two sons, whom she homeschools.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Lovely but tough as nails, Lael Click is the daughter of a celebrated frontiersman. Haunted by her father's former captivity with the Shawnee Indians, as well as the secret sins of her family's past, Lael comes of age in the fragile Kentucky settlement her father founded.

Though she faces the loss of a childhood love, a dangerous family feud, and the affection of a Shawnee warrior, Lael draws strength from the rugged land she calls home, and from Ma Horn, a distant relative who shows her the healing ways of herbs and roots found in the hills.

But the arrival of an outlander doctor threatens her view of the world, God, and herself--and the power of grace and redemption. This epic novel gives readers a glimpse into the simple yet daring lives of the pioneers who first crossed the Appalachians, all through the courageous eyes of a determined young woman.

Laura Frantz's debut novel offers a feast for readers of historical fiction and romance lovers alike.

My thoughts:

I was hoping to finish this before the tour ends. Not sure if I'll make it. I am scared to death that the Shawnee are going to kidnap this girl.

Hubby's review of Double Cross by James David Jordan

About the book:

Raised by a father who was a former Special Forces officer, Taylor is beautiful and brilliant and knows how to take care of herself. But she is haunted by her past and the sacrifice her father made to save her from a brutal rape when she was seventeen. After a controversial stint in the Secret Service, she has become the most prominent private security specialist in America. When she discovers the body of a former client's top assistant, all the evidence points to embezzlement and suicide. But Taylor has no way of knowing that her mother, who ran out when Taylor was nine, is about to reappear and lead her down a twisting path of danger and deceit. It's a road that won't end until they reach the spot where Taylor's father died-where Taylor learns some sacrifices can never be earned.

Hubby's review:

When Double Cross begins Taylor is living in the house with Simon Mason’s daughter, Kacey, and they are good friends. First, she discovers a body of a former client. Then Taylor’s mother shows back up in her life after being missing for about twenty years. Taylor wants to be loved, but she doesn’t know what real love is, so she is looking in all the wrong places and hooking up with people who use her just like she uses them.

The story has so much danger and intrigue combined with dizzying twists and turns that the reader is on edge waiting for disaster to happen. The author does such a fantastic job pulling you into the characters’ lives that you are blown away by some of the things that take place. He does an excellent job making you care about them, which is what makes the story so inspiring. This reviewer didn’t want the story to end but was satisfied with how things turned out. It’s impossible to not long for more installments in the series.

Double Cross was published by Broadman and Holman and releases October 1, 2009.

Review of Always Watching by Collins as seen on Christian Book Previews site.

Always Watching

About the book:

The daughter of a rock star, 16-year-old Shaley O'Connor has everything---until she discovers her friend's body backstage. Is Tom Hutchens's death connected to her? Soon, frightening messages appear and paparazzi begin to stalk her. Can Shaley find Tom's killer before he strikes again? Where's God when she needs him?

My review:

Overall this was a great story that was told in a believeable young adult/teen voice. There was just enough intrigue and suspense to keep you reading. The typical Collins ick factor is present when the first body is found, but it's not overly done. There is a definite "creep" factor that also fits with a Collins suspense. Some description sounds very Brandilyn, but this story had a combined voice that was pretty well done. The spiritual tone is a bit stiff at times, but relevant to the plot. The first person POV also added a unique presentation. The missing dad element was a bit cliche, but it does make for a great underlying mystery.

When the chase is on it leaves the reader a bit breathless. It wasn't too difficult to figure out who the bad guy was, but that didn't happen until later on in the story, so that was good storytelling. The ending wraps up some, but not all of the elements of the story. This works well for a series, but the cliffhanger ending may not work well for people who like a feeling of completion at the end of a novel. I would recommend this story for people who enjoy mystery/suspense and want to read one from a young adult/teen perspective.

Now I'm giving away June Bug by Chris Fabry.

Okay. This is going to be an interesting discussion. To enter for a chance to win this book simply post a comment. Here is the catch...talk about missing children. Do you know any children who have simply disappeared and they now have their picture on a milk carton or poster? Can you imagine how you would feel if one of your own children went missing? Worse, what if you discovered that you were the missing child? I can't imagine.

I'll go first. My dad knew a college professor whose teenage daughter suddenly disappeared back in the late 1970s. To this day no one has ever seen her. My father introduced us because this man taught at the college I attended. I went to his house. Her picture was on the wall. Though he never spoke of it to me, I'm sure his grief was beyond comprehension. That's it for my comment. Now what about you?

About the book:

I believed everything my daddy told me until I walked into Walmart and saw my picture on a poster. . . .

For as long as she can remember, June Bug and her father have traveled the back roads of the country in their beat-up RV, spending many nights parked at Walmart. One day, as she walks past the greeter at the front of the store, her eyes are drawn to the pictures of missing children, where she is shocked to see herself.

This discovery begins a quest for the truth about her father, the mother he rarely speaks of, and ultimately herself. But when her fathers past catches up with them, forces beyond his control draw them back to Dogwood, West Virginia, down a winding path that will change their lives forever.

My thoughts:

I have an ARC for this book. I haven't had a chance to crack it open yet but it sounds like my kind of story!

Ten Mistakes that Can Cost Authors a Fortune!

Okay, folks, wish I had come up with this on my own, but as advised, I'll trust the "expert" to give the advice. This article is reprinted with permission. For details check the bottom of the article.

Featured Article - 10 Mistakes Authors Make That Can Cost Them a Fortune (and How to Avoid Them) by Penny Sansevieri at penny@marketingexpert.com
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When it comes to books, promotion, and book production I know that it can sometimes feel like a minefield of choices. And while I can't address each of these in minutia, there are a number of areas that are keenly tied to a book's success (or lack thereof). Here are ten for you to consider:
1) Not understanding the importance of a book cover. I always find it interesting that an author will sometimes spend years writing their book and then leave the cover design to someone who either isn't a designer, or doesn't have a working knowledge of book design or the publishing industry. Or, worse, they create a design without having done the proper market research. Consider these facts for a minute: shoppers in a bookstore spend an average of 8 seconds looking at the front cover of a book and 15 seconds looking at the back before deciding whether to buy it. Further, a survey of booksellers showed that 75% of them found the book cover to be the most important element of the book. Also, sales teams at book distribution often only take the book cover with them when they shop titles to stores. And finally, please don't attempt to design your own book cover. Much like cutting your own hair, this is never a good idea.
2) Trusting someone who has limited or no track record. When you hire a team, make sure you ask the service provider for their track record. Often I see an author who successfully marketed their single title now feel they have all the marketing knowledge they need to help you market yours. Unless you are in similar markets, I would avoid this at all costs. You want people who have worked in the industry and know the needs of the market beyond just one title. You also want someone who has some history. Ask for referrals, and success stories. I give references all the time to potential new clients, but when I am the one interviewing a new service provider I will ask for them but never call them. I mean who's going to give you a bad referral? I want to see that they have some names they can give me, then I'll go online and Google them to gain some insight into their history and online reputation.
3) Listening to people who aren't experts. When you ask someone's opinion about your book, direction, or topic, make sure they are either working in your industry or know your consumer. If, for example, you have written a young adult (YA) book, don't give it to your co-workers to read and get feedback (yes, I know some YA books have adult market crossover appeal, but this is different). If you've written a book for teens, then give it to teens to read. Same is true for self-help, diet, romance. Align yourself with your market. You want the book to be right for the reader, in the end that's all that matters.
4) Trusting Oprah to solve all your problems. Getting on Oprah is an article in and of itself, but let me say this: the quickest way to turn off a publicist is to use the "O" word. Why? Because anyone worth their salt knows how tough a road the Oprah pitch can be. Not just that, but sometimes authors will become so myopic and obsessed about this show that they lose sight of other, maybe better opportunities. And trust me on another point: someone (friend, co-worker, family, spouse), somewhere will tell you, "You should go on Oprah," and while you might be 100% perfect Oprah material the only people who can determine if you should be on her show are her producers. Shoot for the stars, dream big, but be realistic about your campaign, otherwise you'll spend a lot of time and a lot of money chasing a potentially elusive target.
5) Planning for the short-term only. There's a real fallacy that exists in publishing and it's this: "instant bestseller." Anyone who has spent any amount of time in the industry knows there is no such thing as "instant," and certainly the words "overnight success" are generally not reserved for books. Book promotion should be viewed as a long runway. Meaning that you should plan for the long term. Don't spend all your marketing dollars in the first few months of a campaign. We find this especially true for self-published titles that need a little more TLC than their traditionally published counterparts. We offer campaigns that last 90-days, but that's not because we think 90 days is all it will take to make your book a success, it's because we find it's a reasonable time to get started, get a foothold and start your progress down the runway of success.
6) Not understanding timing. Timing is a funny issue. First, there's the timing that books follow to get reviewed, lead times as it were. Then there's production timing, and if you're lucky enough to get a distributor there's the time it will take for a distributor to get your book into the proper channels. A book launch should be planned carefully and then leave wiggle room for slipped dates and late deliveries (which will happen). I recommend that you sit down with someone who can help you strategize timing so you can plan appropriately for your book launch. A missed date is akin to a missed opportunity.
7) Hiring people who aren't in the book industry. Let's face it, even to those of us who have been in this industry for a while it still doesn't always make sense. So hiring someone who has no book or publishing experience isn't just a mistake, it could be a costly one. With some vendors like web designers you can get away with that. But someone who has only designed business cards can't, for example, design a book cover. Make sure you hire the right specialist for the right project. Also, you've likely spent years putting together this project, make sure you make choices based on what's right and not what's cheapest. If you shop right you can often find vendors who are perfect for your project and who fit your budget. There's an old saying that goes: You can find a good lawyer, and you can find a cheap lawyer, but it's hard or near impossible to find a good, cheap lawyer. The same applies in the book world.
8) Designing your own website. You should never cut your own hair or design your own site. Period. End of story. But ok, let me elaborate. Let's say you designed your own site and saved a few thousand dollars instead of paying a web designer. Now you're off promoting your book and suddenly you're getting a gazillion hits to your site. The problem is the site is not converting these visitors into sales. How much money did you lose by punting the web designer and doing it yourself? Hard to know. Scary, isn't it?
9) Becoming a media diva. Let's face it, you need the media more than they need you. I know. Ouch. But it's the unfortunate truth. So here's the thing: be grateful. Thank the interviewer, send a follow-up thank you note after the interview. Don't expect the interviewer to read your book and don't get upset if they get some facts wrong. Just gently, but professionally correct them in such a way that they don't look bad or stupid. Never ask for an interview to be done over. Most media people don't have the time. I mention this because it actually happened to a producer friend of mine who did an interview with a guy and he decided he didn't like it and wanted a second shot. Not gonna happen. The thing is, until you get a dressing room with specially designed purple M&M's, don't even think about becoming a diva. The best thing you can do is create relationships. Show up on time, show up prepared, and always, always, always be grateful.
10) Hiring the best and then not trusting their advice. Here's the thing that's always confused me. You hire me, then don't listen to my advice. And it's not just me, I hear this all the time from other industry professionals. Look, it's not an ego thing, it really isn't. It's just this: if you're paying good money to your vendors, asking them for advice and then not taking it, you might have a disconnect. Perhaps a breakdown in communication, maybe you don't trust the person you hired. If you don't trust them, then you should part ways and find someone you have some chemistry with. Otherwise what's the point? Build your team with people you enjoy working with and respect. Then when they try and guide you or save you some money, take the time to listen.
David Claassen
I'm a follower of Jesus Christ and seek to live my life to please Him and for His glory. I'm walking this journey with my life's partner, Diann. We've been married since 1972 and have two grown children. Our daughter Julie serves as a missionary with her husband Victor in Mexico in a ministry they founded called Fishers of Men. Check their ministry out at www.fishersofmenmexico.org. Our son Dan is married to Teri and he's a detective in a police department in a suburb of Indianapolis.
I have pastored the Mayfair-Plymouth Congregational Church of Toledo, Ohio since 1975, having just celebrated 33 years at the church. You can check out the church at http://www.mayfairplymouth.org/. You can also visit me at my blog, where I add material about every other day or so.
Raising white homing pigeons is another of my hobbies. I enjoy watching them soar overhead.
That's just a little bit about me. Thanks for visiting. God bless you!
ABOUT THE BOOK
Kathryn is resigned to living out her last days at Victorian Manor, a beautiful old home for senior citizens. Then one day a miraculous experience happens to Kathryn at the garden fountain, and she begins living an adventure beyond her wildest dreams. Love and sacrifice take on new meaning as she involves a social worker and a police detective in carrying out what she believes to be her calling -- to rescue a street child named Jasmine.
Kathryn's Fountain celebrates the gifts that the generations can bring to each other. The conclusion is a resounding affirmation that it's never too late to make a difference.
Montana Rose by Mary Connealy is up on CFBA! Includes bonus review!
This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Montana Rose
Barbour Publishing, Inc (July 1, 2009)
by
Mary Connealy
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Mary's writing journey is similar to a lot of others. Boil it down to persistence, oh, go ahead and call it stubbornness. She just kept typing away. She think the reason she did it was because she was more or less a dunce around people—prone to sit silently when she really ought to speak up(or far worse, speak up when she ought to sit silently).
So, Mary had all these things, she want to say, in her head; the perfect zinger to the rude cashier, which you think of an hour after you’ve left the store, the perfect bit of wisdom when someone needs help, which doesn’t occur to you until they solve their problems themselves, the perfect guilt trip for the kids, which you don’t say because you’re not an idiot. She keep all this wit to herself, much to the relief of all who know her, and then wrote all her great ideas into books. It’s therapeutic if nothing else, and more affordable than a psychiatrist.
So then a very nice, oh so nice publishing company like Barbour Heartsong comes along and says, “Hey, we’ll pay you money for this 45,000 word therapy session.” That’s as sweet as it gets.
Mary's journey to publication is the same as everyone’s except for a few geniuses out there who make it hard for all of us. And even they probably have an Ode to Roast Beef or two in their past.
Mary has signed an exclusive contract with Barbour that will have her writing eighteen (18) books for them over the next four years! This book is the first in the Montana Marriage Series. The second book will be the Husband Tree, and the third will be Wildflower Bride
ABOUT THE BOOK
Fire up your love of romance with Montana Rose.
When surrounded by a mob of ill-bred, foul-smelling, women-hungry men, the newly widowed and seemingly spoiled Cassie “China Doll” Griffin has no choice. Marrying handyman Red Dawson seems the only alternative to Cassie’s being hitched to a brutal rancher. But can this “China doll” bear exchanging smooth silk for coarse calico? Red was reluctant to be yoked to an unbeliever, but sometimes a man has no choice. Will Red change Cassie’s heart by changing her name? Wade Sawyer is obsessed with saving Cassie from a marriage of convenience. How far will he go make her his own?
If you would like to read the first chapter of Montana Rose, go HERE
My review:
Montana Rose is a good title for this book because it shows how genuine love and concern for another human being can cause a person to bloom who had been previously stifled by fear. There were many things I enjoyed about this story. At first I found the repetition about the heroine Cassie's submissiveness, her abuse history, and the reference to her being a China doll a bit annoying. I clearly caught that early on. But the story was strong enough to pull me along. I quickly forgot that issue once the story picked up speed regarding her developing marital relationship and all of the peaks and valleys they experienced along the way.
There were so many wonderfully romantic scenes in this story that I couldn't choose just one. There was also a lot of humor like when Red told her to speak her mind and she bowled him over during her birthing pains. That was LOL funny and also very believable. Red was the ultimate hero and such a godly example to his wife, yet he was human and obviously flawed, too. His character's strengths and weaknesses seemed very balanced to me.
The character arcs and emotional/spiritual development of these character was also very well done. The subplot with Belle was heartbreaking, but I have a sneaking suspicion that we haven't seen the last of Belle. I also enjoyed how the author showed that loving relationships can cause people to see what they are missing whether it's in relation to each other or between them and God. She did a great job showing how that inspires people to want something better. To want to change. In Montana Rose it created a longing for something more than they are currently experiencing. That was very well done.
So while this story wasn't perfect in the beginning, it really warmed my heart as the story developed and I believe the message is powerful (and beautiful) if the reader pays attention to it. This story has the potential to help women who are stuck in a rut like Cassie had been, and like Belle remained, and hopefully readers will seek something more for their life (like respect) as a result. Highly recommended.
My review of Outlaw's Bride by Lori Copeland
About the book:
Falsely convicted of bank robbery, drifter Johnny McAllister is sent to a rehabilitation program in the home of a California judge. When he goes to Judge McMann’s home, his aim is to be a model prisoner, hoping to be released early and return to his life's mission: to kill the man who wiped out his family 15 years before. He’s planned for everything…except his encounter with Ragan, the beautiful and kind housekeeper, and with the generous folks of Barren Flats. But can Johnny let go of his anger and embrace a new life? One that would include Ragan as his bride? This tender story reveals how even the hard law of the land doesn’t stand a chance when God’s mercy and true love come to reside in a heart. Formerly titled The Bride of Johnny McAllister, rewritten for the inspirational market.
My review:
“This is the first book by Lori Copeland that I've read. I really enjoyed it. The romance was delightful and even a bit yummy in some places, though there was one spot where I was like, "Huh? She did not just do that!" But overall I'd recommend it because honestly it held my attention better than most historical westerns do, and it did ring true for the most part. The characters were engaging and very well developed. The spiritual lessons learned made this a worthwhile read, too. I grew very fond of the hero and heroine by book's end. Outlaw's Bride made me chuckle and smile. But most importantly I felt that satisfied "ahhh..." at the end, which for me is essential for a romance to be considered truly romantic.
Outlaw's Bride was published by Harvest House and was released in July 2009.
Now I'm giving away That Certain Spark by Cathy Marie Hake
To enter the contest to win a copy of this book simply post a comment and make sure to leave me a way to contact you if you win. The comment needs to pertain to the topic of women working in traditionally male careers. In particular, what do you think about books where the heroine has a "man's job"? Do you like reading these types of stories? Why or why not?
My ten cents... I think this is becoming a trend lately. Women want to read about strong female characters. However, historically most women weren't in these types of roles. I suppose reading about the lives of typical women would be boring, so why not write about the women who managed to do the unthinkable and work in a "man's" field? It seems kind of feminist to me, but it does make for an interesting story. That said...um, I'm not really sure what I said, but there you have it!
Mini-synopsis:
A small town in 1890's Texas is up in arms when their new doctor turns out to be a woman.
About the book:
Gooding, Texas, is about to gain a double blessing—a veterinarian and a doctor. But when siblings Enoch and Taylor Bestman arrive, the discovery that Taylor is a lady doctor has the town up in arms. Especially Karl Van der Vort, the town blacksmith, who becomes the first patient...against his will.
Though hesitant to believe in Taylor's doctoring skills, Karl finds himself oddly protective of this surprising woman who dares to drive about town on her own, wearing the color red, for heaven's sake! Taylor, on the other hand, wants only to prove that doctoring is her life's calling, despite the town's opposition. The result? Pride meets attraction head-on, and sparks begin to fly.
My review of Beyond Me by Kathi Macias
About the book:
Written in a warm, personal, easy read-and-understand style, Beyond Me is an invitation to pursue true discipleship. Beyond Me will help you clearly see the distinction between your ever-increasing clash of cultures—the clash between life and death or, in other words, wanting to live in such a way that puts others first but struggling with your desire for self-preservation.
My review:
This book was pretty good. It was very deep. Being non-fiction, it took me much longer to read that most books. However, it had some beautiful stories in it that illustrated the points that were being made. That was my favorite part of this book. This would be a great tool to facilitate discussion at a home Bible study or in a women's group.
Guest review of The Watchers by Mark Andrew Olsen
Synopsis from B & N:
Just below the surface among the family of God lives another family tree—one traced in spirit, invisible and ageless, known as the Watchers. For two thousand years they've seen beyond the veil separating this world from the next, passing on their gift through a lineage mostly overlooked. Throughout history they've scouted the borders of the supernatural frontier, but now their survival hangs by a thread. And their fate lies in the hands of a young woman, her would-be killer, and a mystery they must solve....
"Congratulations. You just reached my own little corner of cyberspace.
Who am I?
Abby Sherman, that's who.
Who are you? And why are you checking me out?
Drop me a few pixels, and let's find out!"
With that innocent invitation, Abby Sherman unwittingly steps in the crosshairs of history, and thus begins her harrowing tale—taking her from ocean-front Malibu to the streets of London, the jungles in West Africa, the Temple Mount, Jerusalem, and to the very gates of heaven itself!
A sneak preview of eternity becomes her one-way ticket to danger—and discovery….
Two lives collide in a globe-circling adventure involving both peril and discovery: Abby, a young woman whose visions of heaven turn her into a Web-celebrity; and Dylan, a troubled young man sent by an ancient foe to silence her. From California beachfronts to Nigerian rain forests to Jerusalem and back again, The Watchers is high-octane blends of action, mystery, and spiritual battle spanning centuries.
A woman's awe-inspiring vision launches her on a quest through distant lands and ancient history, face-to-face with eternity and into the arms of a familyline on the brink of annihilation...
A man who is hired to exterminate her discovers the folly of blind loyalty, then learns how to wage war in a realm he never believed had existed...
An extraordinary saga of the unseen war against evil, the reality of the supernatural, and the transforming power of forgiveness.
Lynn Rush's Guest Review:
This book was outstanding. At first, I had trouble following everything with the spiritual lineage and then the multiple point of views, but once I caught on, I was along for the ride. And it was a supernatural, action-packed ride, indeed!
Mark Andrew Olsen really delves into the notion of forgiveness. Now, I can’t elaborate much without giving it all away, but it was amazing to see the growth of these characters. And during their development, they asked why, how, and all those questions we all ask during times of struggle, so they seemed real to me.
At times, yes, I was a little like, “Okay, let’s get to more of the action and get this mystery solved already.” But, for the most part, it had me turning page after page rather quickly to find out the ending. I’m looking forward to reading his next one—The Warrior.
Night Watchman by Mark Mynheir is up on CFBA - bonus review by Michelle's hubby.
This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Night Watchman
Multnomah Books (May 5, 2009)
by
Mark Mynheir
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Mark Mynheir was born and raised on the east coast of Central Florida. Like most boys growing up, Mark enjoyed sports, mainly football and martial arts.
In 1983, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and went through basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina. After serving four years in the Marines, Mark changed gears and pursued a career in law enforcement.
During his career as a police officer, Mark has worked as a narcotics agent, a S.W.A.T. team member, and a homicide detective.
Over sixteen years ago, during a health crisis involving his oldest son, Mark gave his life to Jesus Christ. Shortly after his conversion, he felt God leading him in a new direction: writing. Now he balances dual careers as a police officer and novelist.
He has authored Rolling Thunder (The Truth Chasers Book One), From the Belly of the Dragon (The Truth Chasers Book Two), and The Void (The Truth Chasers Book Three).
Mark is married to the love of his life and has three fantastic children, and they all currently reside in Central Florida.
ABOUT THE BOOK
When everything is ripped away...
Eleven months ago, Ray Quinn was a tough, quick-witted Orlando homicide detective at the top of his game-until a barrage of bullets ended his career.and his partner's life.
Now medically retired with a painful handicap, Ray battles the haunting guilt for his partner's death. Numbing the pain with alcohol and attitude, Ray takes a job as a night watchman at a swanky Orlando condo community.
But when a pastor and an exotic dancer are found dead in one of the condos in an apparent murder-suicide, Ray can no longer linger in the shadows. The victim’s sister is convinced her brother was framed and begs Ray to take on an impossible case─to challenge the evidence and clear her brother’s name.
Ray reluctantly pulls the thread of this supposedly dead-end case only to unravel a murder investigation so deep that it threatens to turn the Orlando political landscape upside down and transform old friends into new enemies. As Ray chases down leads and interrogates suspects, someone is watching his every move, someone determined to keep him from ever finding out the truth─at any cost.
Hubby's review:
While not a fast-paced read like some of the author’s prior novels, Night Watchman is an excellent story that will grip your heart and pull you into the world of law enforcement with all of its complexities and dangers inherent in that field.
The story begins with a strip dancer and a pastor found dead in his apartment. Initially it was ruled as a murder/suicide by the homicide department and the case was closed. It looked like a dead end case, but then ex-homicide detective Ray Quinn enters the scene when the pastor’s sister pleads for help. She doesn’t believe her brother was murdered.
Ray Quinn was injured during a prior investigation and his partner at the time was murdered. He walks with a limp due to the severe injury he received. Even though it is physically taxing on him, he reluctantly helps the pastor’s sister.
The story takes you in to a deep political landscape with imbedded corruption that seems impossible to escape. One of the lessons learned from this story is that sometimes the people you least expect are the people who will save your neck.
Night Watchman was published by Multnomah and released in May 2009.
Mohamed's Moon by Keith Clemmons is up on CFBA
This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Mohamed's Moon
Realms (May 5, 2009)
by
Keith Clemons
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
A strong defender of Christian values, noted author and lecturer Keith Clemons is a native of Southern California and graduate of English Literature at California State University, Fullerton. In his former capacity as Vice President of Marketing for Mytec Technologies Inc.
He was a frequent conference speaker, particularly when the forum centered on Electronic Commerce. Today, in addition to writing, he appears on radio and television where he uses his communications skills to explain coming trends that will affect both the church and society at large.
His passion for communication has resulted in the previous publication of more than a hundred articles. To date, Mr. Clemons has completed five novels including Angel in the Alley and the award winning If I Should Die, These Little Ones, and Above The Stars.
He resides with his wife and daughter at their home in Caledon, Ontario, Canada.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Are we enemies...
or brothers?
Two brothers separated at birth grow up worlds apart. Outwardly, they're exactly alike, but inwardly, nothing's the same--one is a devotee of fundamentalist Islam; the other, a Christian. In this modern-day Cain and Abel story, the lines are drawn not just over whose God is right, but also over the fact that they're both in love with the same girl.
It's a conflict with grave repercussions, little hope of resolution--and time is running out. In the background, a plan has been set in motion that will bring the United States government to its knees. Will an unexpected visitation reconcile the brothers in time to save the woman they love--and ultimately, themselves--from the coming devastation?
In his award-winning style, author Keith Clemons delivers a profound comparison between Christianity and Islam, a dichotomy of life versus death, love versus hate, and grace versus legalism. Mohamed's Moon will plunge you into a world where hatred and heinous acts are justified. But if hatred is potent, it pales in comparison to the power of God's love.
My review of The Apothecary's Daughter by Julie Klassen
About the book:
Lillian Haswell, brilliant daughter of the local apothecary, yearns for more adventure and experience than life in her father's shop and their small village provides. She also longs to know the truth behind her mother's disappearance, which villagers whisper about but her father refuses to discuss. Opportunity comes when a distant aunt offers to educate her as a lady in London. Exposed to fashionable society and romance-as well as clues about her mother-Lilly is torn when she is summoned back to her ailing father's bedside. Women are forbidden to work as apothecaries, so to save the family legacy, Lilly will have to make it appear as if her father is still making all the diagnoses and decisions. But the suspicious eyes of a scholarly physician and a competing apothecary are upon her. As they vie for village prominence, three men also vie for Lilly's heart.
My review:
Finally got a chance to read this book and it was wonderful, as expected. I enjoyed the fact that there were so many subplots to keep my attention. And I loved that the author had me guessing for a good portion of the book in regards to the young woman's future.
The title of this book fits the story perfectly. It has a bittersweet meaning that only someone who is really "into" the story would understand. I almost felt like I was watching a movie play out on the big screen because the details were so vivid. Some were so vivid, in fact, that they made me shudder. It was a bad idea for me to read that leaching scene right before I went to bed. You can imagine why.
I didn't envy the decisions the heroine needed to make. I also found the peculiarities regarding her brother's behavior intriguing. Since I have clients with similar diagnoses, I thought the author did a great job portraying the particulars of someone with his limited abilities. It was good to see an accurate portrayal of two people with special needs that were not immediately tucked away in asylums as was the trend back in that era. Fans of Regency romances should really enjoy this book.
The Apothecary's Daughter was published by Bethany House and released in January 2009.
Hubby's review of Certain Jeopardy by Jeff Strueker and Alton Gansky
About the book:
Six American men live behind a protective facade, their real work hidden from neighbors and friends. Different in countless ways, they are intimately the same in one: at any moment their lives can be altered with a phone call, and their actions may change the world.They are Special Ops. And one team's mission is about to hit certain jeopardy status when the discovery of an Al Qaeda base in Venezuela becomes secondary to thwarting the transport of a nuclear weapons expert from that training camp to Iran.
Hubby's review:
Certain Jeopardy is a thrilling look into the heart of special operations in the US military. The plot shows how the men and women in our armed forces, especially in special ops, endanger their lives for their love of freedom and the United States. It also shows how much their families give to up to support them in their commitment to serve the country. It’s a very fast-paced novel and keeps you wondering what will happen next. The characters operate as a team, almost like brothers, but tighter. It’s because of their drive to survive and do the right thing so that millions of people will be saved from certain jeopardy. Without their intervention people wouldn’t be safe and the men bent on destruction would win.
Certain Jeopardy was published by Broadman and Holman and released in May 2009.
Hubby's review of Comes A Horsemen by Robert Liparulo
About the book:
The ancients saw Death as a blazing figure on horseback, swift and merciless. Those facing the black chasm often mistook their pounding hearts for the beating of hooves.
Now, two FBI agents pursuing a killer from a centuries-old cult realize they have become his prey.
Hubby's review:
The opening is scene is gruesome, but it pulls you deeply into the realm of spiritual warfare. It shows how some people will do anything for power or religion…even sell their souls. The story is compelling, fast-paced and will really make you think. People who scare easily will not want to read this book at night or before going to sleep. It’s that intense.
Comes a Horseman was published by Thomas Nelson and released in August 2006.
Timescape by Robert Liparulo is up on CFBA!
This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Timescape
Thomas Nelson (July 14, 2009)
by
Robert Liparulo
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Robert Liparulo is a former journalist, with over a thousand articles and multiple writing awards to his name. His first novel, Comes a Horseman, released to critical acclaim. Each of his subsequent thrillers—Germ, Deadfall, and Deadlock—secured his place as one of today’s most popular and daring thriller writers.
He is known for investing deep research and chillingly accurate predictions of near-future scenarios into his stories. In fact, his thorough, journalistic approach to research has resulted in his becoming an expert on the various topics he explores in his fiction, and he has appeared on such media outlets as CNN and ABC Radio.
Liparulo’s visual style of writing has caught the eye of Hollywood producers. Currently, three of his novels for adults are in various stages of development for the big screen: the film rights to Comes A Horseman. were purchased by the producer of Tom Clancy’s movies; and Liparulo is penning the screenplays for GERM and Deadfall
for two top producers. He is also working with the director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive, Holes) on a political thriller. Novelist Michael Palmer calls Deadfall “a brilliantly crafted thriller.” March 31st marked the publication of Deadfall’s follow-up, Deadlock, which novelist Gayle Lynds calls, “best of high-octane suspense.”
Liparulo’s bestselling young adult series, Dreamhouse Kings, debuted last year with House of Dark Shadows and Watcher in the Woods. Book three, Gatekeepers, released in January, and number four, Timescape, in July. The series has garnered praise from readers, both young and old, as well as attracting famous fans who themselves know the genre inside and out. Of the series, Goosebumps creator R.L. Stine says, “I loved wandering around in these books. With a house of so many great, haunting stories, why would you ever want to go outside?”
With the next two Dreamhouse books “in the can,” he is currently working on his next thriller, which for the first time injects supernatural elements into his brand of gun-blazing storytelling. The story is so compelling, two Hollywood studios are already in talks to acquire it—despite its publication date being more than a year away. After that comes a trilogy of novels, based on his acclaimed short story, which appeared in James Patterson’s Thriller anthology. New York Times bestselling author Steve Berry calls Liparulo’s writing “Inventive, suspenseful, and highly entertaining . . . Robert Liparulo is a storyteller, pure and simple.” He lives with his family in Colorado.
ABOUT THE BOOK
David, Xander, Dad, and Keal have discovered a terrible secret. Now, finding Mom is only a small part of their mission. And time is running out. Using the portals to build an empire, Taksidian wants the house for himself, and there's nothing he won't do to get the family out. The consequences of his meddling reach far beyond the family--to the future of the world itself. The Kings know their survival depends on stopping the bloodthirsty assassin. Now I'm giving away Valley of the Shadow by Tom Pawlik
To enter to win a copy of this book simply post a comment about whether you've gone through the valley or not. Did you ever feel like things had gotten so bad that you couldn't walk through a more painful valley or darker place, but in the end you learned the truth about something that made it worth the trial? I'll pick a winner next Sunday, August 8th.
I'll also go first. I did go through a dark valley in 2006. I'll say on record it was the most painful year of my life. No need to say why, but one thing I did learn from that experience is how much God loves me and how much pride hurts the soul. I have learned not to say "I'd never do that" the hard way. God showed me just how weak I could be if given the right circumstances. Anyway, God has richly blessed me and as the scriptures say He binds up those He wounds. I felt the healing He brought to my soul in a powerful way, and I will always remember His deep and everlasting love for me through it all. Anyone else want to share?
About the book:
Conner fought his way through the woods. Tendrils of mist curled around his legs like serpents seeking to pull him to the ground. But he had to keep going.
He had been here before.
He heard no voices this time. No ghostly whispers from the dark, save one. One single, moaning plea.
Help me!
A shadowy world between life and death, where your worst fears can become reality.
One man lingers on the threshold.
Another has escaped, but he didn't come back alone.
And a third searches for answers as his nightmares draw him back.
Sometimes, to get to the truth, you have to walk through the valley.
My thoughts:
Oh boy, doesn't this sound great?!?! I don't have the book (wah!) so I can't say that it's good. My husband loved the first book so if this one is even half as good it's another winner. :)
