Michelle Sutton has lived in Arizona and since 1991 and has two sons and a husband of 18 years. She began writing fiction in August 2003 when God inspired her to write a novel with realistic characters that would glorify Him. In 2004 she joined ACFW - American Christian Fiction Writers. In 2006 Michelle ran for Volunteer Officer on the ACFW Operating board and ACFW members elected her to serve a two year term. She sold her first manuscript Then Sings My Soul (now re-titled It's Not About Me) to Sheaf House and her debut novel was released in Sept. 2008. The second book in the Second Glances series - It's Not About Him - will be released the following fall (Sept. 2009.)

My review:

What a fabulous conclusion to a strong series. When the Soul Mends is as deep an compulsively readable as the rest of the series. You could try reading it as a stand-alone but I think it's much more effective if it's read within the series. The author did a great job in regards to drawing me in. I was as confused as Hannah was about who I wanted her to end up with. But the author made such as great case for each situation that I changed my mind several times over the course of the series. I am ecstatic with how it ended, too. It seemed impossible, but Cindy pulled it off.

I loved the spiritual thread, which was subtle, yet effective. The part about forgiveness was very well done and portrayed the way life really is. It's one thing to say you should forgive someone and an entirely different thing to follow through with your intenstions. I also really enjoyed the roles the minor characters played in the story. It gave it a richer quality. I just wish the series didn't have to end. This is the kind of story that makes you want to pick up the phone when you turn the last page and talk to someone about it. I highly recommend When the Soul Mends.

Sometimes it takes something big to wake people up from slumber. Now is the time to check out a different kind of thriller. I would like to introduce to you Kingdom Wars 2 : Tartarus.

Tartarus shows the story behind a spiritual battlefield that the human eye can't see. All around us there are angels and demons who are constantly fighting for our attention. At the same time, they are fighting against each other. I really enjoyed reading about how the characters could actually talk to these angels as if they were real people and right here with us. And that God loves us so much that for His children He sends us our very own guardian angel to watch out for us.

This book gives you insight on what is really going on behind the scences of our spiritual lives. In John 10:10 it is written that Satan is here to kill, to steal, and to destroy. This Bible verse is made very clear through out the entire story. In anyway possible, Satan will attack with whatever he's got left in him just to make us hate ourselves or even start to hate God. There are some characters in the story who are murdered, scarred, hurt and confused. All of this can make you doubt who God is, and even if He's real. But there is also a second part to John 10:10 where it says," But I have come so that you may have life and live it abundantly." So while the characters felt really hurt about the crisis that was taken place, they realized that when there is hurt and pain, God is still there and He DID come so that we may live life and live it abundantly. This fictional story can be true in each of our lives.

I admire the strength and power that is shown in each of the characters lives. While some are weak, they later became strong. We sometimes become weak in our walk with Christ when we feel He is distant, or silent. We wonder if He's even there watching. When the main character in this book was being thrown down and beaten by the demons themselves, Christ walked up to the plate and stood right in front in the battle. And everybody else around became scared and couldn't even look at Him. Christ is so powerful and so bright that demons can't even handle it! This book gives you the true benefit of what Jesus can do inside the unseen battlefield.

Jack Cavanaugh knows what he's writing about. He knows how to give you a simple glimpse into the lives of his characters with a sense of humor and killer details. It almost makes you believe its you he's writing about. Thats what makes it more exciting! I become so lost inside this big adventure that felt so real! Not many books leave me wishing there was a second novel to continue the story. But this one definately cuts the cake!


The adventure in this book is brilliantly done. I could hardly put the book down! And when I had to, I was always left wondering what was going to happen in the next chapter. This book is going to leave you on edge! It's better than a movie. So you want a wake-up? Well, this is the book you need. I promise you won't regret it.

Tartarus was published by Simon and Schuster and released in May 2008.

My thoughts:

I totally loved In Between, which was the first book in the series. I am waiting on my copy of the second book before I read this one. I didn't want to skip to the third book without reading the second. This author is fabulous and the series is incredibly well-written and interesting. It's a fun ride! I will post a review of this book after I finish The Big Picture.

Synopsis of the story:

Here was my endorsement.

This brilliantly written novel is sure to educate and inspire readers. The insight Dobson demonstrates regarding the minds of cult leaders and their victims is incredibly accurate. In fact, this is the by far best book I've read that addresses this important issue. I've worked with abused children and pedophiles for nearly two decades and the way perpetrators view the world is clearly skewed by their own twisted desires. The author brings that out in The Black Cloister and shows why women stay in situations that are obviously abusive and why they often don't tell anyone who can help them get out. Dobson weaves a powerful and emotionally gripping tale that at times was so suspenseful that I would rather read the story than eat or sleep. The conclusion is also satisfying as it shows the power of true Godly love and how truth is more powerful than evil when you cling to His promises and minister to His children. I would love to read a sequel to this story.

After Tamara Leigh earned a Master’s Degree in Speech and Language Pathology, she and her husband decided to start a family, with plans for Tamara to continue in her career once she became a mother.

My thoughts:

Slogging through this one with love. I really enjoyed Splitting Harriet but this one is harder for me to get into for some reason. Not sure if I'll finish it or not, but if I do, I'll post a review.

My review:

What an amazing story! I hated for it to end. The only thing I didn't care for was the current "scribe" scenes. I totally loved the scenes from the past and Anne Boleyn's story. It amazes me when I think about how incredibly fickle people were in those days, and how ignorant. For Henry to kill or cast off each wife that wouldn't bear him a son, oy! How sad! I felt sorry for the women because it wasn't their fault. What difficult times they lived in. I found the accounts of the persecution fascinating and also hard to stomach because the story was so well-written I felt like I was there. To think that reading the Bible was enough to get you brutally tortured to the point of death... I shudder if I ponder it too long. So if you love fiction that transports you back in time with realism and cultural flair, you will want to read In the Shadow of Lions. Awesome and compelling storytelling.

My review:

Table for One was laugh out loud funny. I mean really funny. I felt bad for poor Lucy who seemed to make more bad decisions than good ones, but I loved her anyway. She was a great heroine. Edgar was a fabulous hero, too, even if he was a momma's boy. I don't think I would've handled his mother as graciously as Lucy had. My favorite line in the story is Cricket. Cricket. That is during a part of the story where everything stops and no one makes a sound. Isn't that a fabulous way to describe how things go quiet and everyone stares at you. :) I totally loved the author's voice and I think she did a great job with the first person present tense point of view. That is very difficult, but she pulled it off. And this story was mercifully free of cliches. The hilarious thoughts and comments that Lucy had were incredibly well-thought out and very funny. This story touched my heart and tickled my funny bone at the same time. The spiritual arc was superb. I just can't say enough good things about Table for One. I'm thoroughly impressed!

My thoughts:

This is a good read and even a bit edgy. At first it was a tad hard for me to get into, but I know I'll finish it.

My thoughts:

I've read the first two chapters so far. The story is told in the first person point of view. Amy's mother is a real fruit loop. Kind of reminds me of Forrest Gump's mother in the movie. Oy.

My review of Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas

My review:

My women's group used this book to guide discussions on a weekly basis for about six months. The group contained women with kids, without kids, single, divorce, remarried, widowed, and with traditional marriages. Everyone got something out of the discussions that took place despite their current situation. The author uses a lot of examples to try to get points across. Some are better than others, but all were helpful in getting the discussion going. The one chapter we lingered on the longest was the chapter on sex in marriage. This book speaks plainly about a lot of issues that people deal with in marital relationships. The only weakness I can see is that in a marriage where the wife is a Christian and the husband is abusive or hostile towards Chrisitianity, the advice given could be more harmful than helpful - especially the one on serving. As long as the two people in marriage are relatively equal in regards to their care and concern for each other, the advice given should help their marriages tremendously. Overall, this was a fabulous attempt to conquer difficult subjects. No one can write something that will fit all situations, so this author did a great job reaching the majority of his readers.

Pictures from my first book signing ever - in Bisbee, Arizona.

First of all let me just say that I had a blast. Not everyone was as brave as my customers photographed below. When I told them I'd post the pics on my website these ladies all said, "okay." They were as excited as I was about my first booksigning.

The first customer I had today happened to be walking by and she was the attorney I thanked in my book for her legal advice. How fun is that? So she bought a book, and I autographed it to her, but I didn't get a picture with her because I didn't think about it when she came by. Next came these lovely ladies. I forgot to ask them where they lived. Since there was an art festival in town today many people came from out of the area. Pictured below are Pamela (left), me (center) and Leoni (right.) Don't we look happy?



My next brave customer's name was Kelly. I think she said she lived in either Tucson or Phoenix. I spoke to so many people that I forgot the details of every conversation.

My last brave customer was Jamie. She bought my book for her niece MacKenzie, but said she planned to read it, too. In all I sold fourteen books, which isn't bad considering the majority of the residents in Bisbee are not interested in inspirational fiction, nor were many of the artisans and people browsing today, but I still had some great discussions with a lot of very nice people as you can see from their smiling faces. I hope some of them will let me know when they finish my book. I'll check my guestbook once a week just to see if they write me.

Pictured below is my youngest son. He's a sophomore in high school and was a great help to me today. Mainly he kept me smiling and joking, and that helped a lot. What a great kid I have, eh?

My review of Once Blind by Kay Marshall Strom

About the book:

Every generation seems to have people who make a habit of embodying evil, John Newton observed people who have to look up in order to see the bottom. When they come to know God they are examples to others of Gods amazing grace. I, John Newton wrote, was one of these.

This biography of the writer of Amazing Grace takes us on a journey worthy of a Hollywood extravaganza with swashbuckling adventures on the high seas coupled with the horrors of the slave trade. Once Blind retells Newtons conversion during a crushing storm no one expected to survive and then the most unusual years that followed as an evangelical clergyman with the Church of England during which he was known for his ability to bridge gaping theological chasms.

In the end, John Newton risked his reputation, his wife's emotional wellbeing, even his cherished right to preach all so that he could bear witness to the horrors he had witnessed and had participated in, and to help bring about laws that would stop the slave trade.

This is indeed a timely book as we mark the 200th anniversary of the laws that set in motion the end of 18th century slavery, for Gods grace is every bit as amazing today as it was in Newtons era.

My review:

Several years ago I read The Infidel by Joe Musser (B&H 2001) and enjoyed it very much. It was a novel - rather than a biography - based on John Newton's life. Once Blind is very similar to The Infidel so both authors had obviously studied up on John Newton's life, though they had slightly different takes on the details. Once Blind was an easy read, though I found the symbols used to illustrate cursing like... #@(%& quite distracting at times. There was also an occasional point of view issue, but other than those minor things, I really liked the story. The fact that I finished it says a lot considering most books of the books I start never get read through to the end. At any rate, this biography was a nice review of John Newton's life and the comparison to modern day slavery issues at the end is worth considering. There is even a section that talks about how you can become a modern day abolitionist.

I also appreciated how the author used excerpts from some of Newton's sermons to make points in the story. Some scenes were pretty descriptive of the horrors of slavery, but nothing the average reader would get ill over. The details were not too graphic. At any rate, Once Blind is a worthwhile read and I definitely recommend taking the time to read it.

Once Blind was published by Authentic Books and released in January 2008.
